Description of activity with detailed steps

Teacher led activity

How much fun in calendar!!
How much fun in a calendar!!
  1. Do you recognize this picture? Yes, it is a calendar of a month with 30 days.
  2. Your teacher will show you how to create this with spreadsheet and help you identify the hidden patterns in this calendar.
  3. See if you can find the following:
    1. Horizontal sequences
    2. Vertical sequences
    3. Diagonal sequences
    4. Find rectangular and square arrangements in the calendar
    5. Averages and sums in the calendar
  4. Finding days when dates are given
Number puzzles

Your teacher will discuss the following number puzzle with you. See if you can solve the last equation by doing different operations on the numbers. CORRECT THE 1+2+3 to 1 O 2 O 3 IN TABLE BELOW

Algebra made easy

Look at the following columns and numbers on each one of the pictures. Work with your teacher to find out what is the relationship between the columns (x) and (y). Can you state it like an equation? Have you studied this in algebra? You can create your own patterns and see how numbers behave!!

Student activities

  1. Make more calendars and explore the patterns; your teacher may do this in groups with you.
  2. Your teacher will give you patterns for you to create using spreadsheet and explore.
  3. Investigate a set of triangular numbers with a spreadsheet
  4. Investigate triads of of consecutive numbers
    1. Sum of a set of consecutive numbers
    2. Product of a set of consecutive numbers
    3. End product of a set of consecutive numbers
    4. End product of a set of consecutive numbers divided by the middle number
  5. Investigate four consecutive numbers
    1. Sum of end numbers
    2. Sum of middle numbers
    3. Product of end numbers
    4. Product of middle numbers

Portfolio

  1. Calendar explorations in a spreadsheet
  2. Your spreadsheet files
