Getting introduced to lines and angles
In this activity, you will explore how angles are formed and the different kinds of angles

Objective

  1. Using Geogebra to accurately construct and label geometric figures
  2. Visualizing how angles are formed

What prior skills are assumed

  1. Basic familiarity with the Geogebra tool bar and the different features

What resources do you need

  1. Computer lab with projection
  2. Access to internet
  3. Handout for Ubuntu
  4. Handout for Geogebra
  5. Geogebra files for demonstration

What digital skills will you learn

  1. Learning to work with interactive applications, with given input
  2. Creating, saving files with Geogebra
  3. Accurately drawing and measuring geometry figures

Description of activity with detailed steps

Teacher led activity

From this activity on, you will use both the algebra and the geometry view of Geogebra to systematically study various ideas in geometry. Have you wondered why this tool is called Geogebra? Look at what happens to the Geogebra window, when you create/ draw something. As you draw a figure, the algebraic way of writing that figure is also displayed in the window.

You will use the following Geogebra files which for this lesson.


Your teacher will demonstrate the following to you:

  1. Plotting a point - observe how she plots and what happens to the algebraic view
  2. Drawing a line and line segment
  3. Measuring the angle when the lines intersect
  4. Demonstrating angle formation by rotation and the distinction between clockwise and counter clockwise rotation. Can you guess for a minute what would happen if these were not treated differently? Discuss this with your friends and teacher
  5. Drawing parallel lines and perpendicular lines
  6. Demonstrating angle pairs

Student activities

After the demonstration you will construct the following:

  1. Two intersecting lines with all angles marked
  2. An angle being formed by a rotating segment
  3. Formation of supplementary and complementary angles
  4. A pair of parallel lines with all angles marked

Portfolio

  1. Your completed Geogebra files will be the addition to your digital portfolio.
