Background

IT for Change and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghatan (KVS) are collaborating to design and conduct an online workshop on “Audio resources creation for teaching ” for KVS teachers. The workshop is based on the National ICT curriculum theme - Creating with ICT. This note discusses the objectives, approach, requirements of participants and expected outcomes from the workshop.

Objectives of the workshop

  1. Exploring new digital methods for language learning.
  2. Exploring Audacity FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) to create language resources for language teaching
  3. Learning recording and editing audio using Audacity. Making audio resource richer by using multiple sources
  4. Understand the philosophy of creating and adapting existing audio resources (Open Educational Resources created with FOSS)
  5. Publishing created audio resource on a public repository for the benefit of all teachers

Requirements from the participants

  1. All the participants should have a computer (desktop or laptop) along with a good mic + speaker (headphones).
  2. Audacity application must be installed on the computer. For installation instructions, refer https://teacher-network.in/OER/index.php/Learn_Audacity#Installation.
  3. Each participant need to select poem, phrase or drama to create audio material on the topic. Click here to fill your topic details in the form and selected topics details you can see from here.

Join the webinar sessions

The 3 webinar sessions will be held on the following dates: 7th, 9th and 11th of August. The webinar timings will be from 2.30 to 4 pm.

Expected Outcomes

It is expected that by the end of the workshop, each participant would have created an audio resource, on their selected topic (poem or prose or any other resource). This resource would be published on a public repository.

Webinar 1 Role of Audio in Language Teaching Learning 1. Introduction to the workshop and agenda.

2. Demonstration and discussion about listening and ELT. Hearing a Karadi tale and participants will identify different audio elements

3. Participants will choose one topic to create audio

4. Go through the checklist of recording a good quality audio

5. Go through basic audio recording options in audacity

6. Save the recorded audio files.

Assignment -

  1. Select topic to create audio
  2. Record the audio using Audacity
Webinar 2 1. Understanding Audacity editing functions

2. Understanding when and how to use audio effects

3. Adding sound elements.

4. Adding a second track

1. Edit recorded audio files using basic tools as needed

2. Get familiar with audacity project files and the audio files

3. Use some Audacity features - noise removal.

4. Use the "amplify" feature to adjust the volume of the audio files

5. Use multiple tracks to add background music for the audio

2. Using different background music elements to make more effective of the audio

3. Publish created audio resources on the web as open educational resources (OER).

1. Use fade in/out, pitch to make your audio more rich and clear.

2. Use multiple tracks to add background music for the audio

3. Add different audio elements to the audio in any particular places

4. Understanding of SoundCloud audio repository.

5. Upload and share our created audio files on SoundCloud.
