When you select File → Open, you get to chose if you will create a text file or a presentation file.  Hence most functions explained  for LibreOffice Writer can be used in the same manner in LibreOffice Impress, including  entering text, formatting text, inserting a numbered list and inserting a text box. These are shown in the images below.

You can change the background and line colours in the text boxes in your slides. To change the background colour, select Format → Style → Edit Style → Area. Select the colour you want (white is a good background). Similarly, if you do not want a border for the text box, you can remove it. Select Format → Style → Edit Style → Line → Style → None.
