Background

The objective of the Telangana state education department is to integrate technology into teaching and learning in sustained and meaningful ways. The department is focused on upgrading the school labs in 3,000 schools with a digital lab and digital resources. In this context, it is proposed:

  1. to evolve a meaningful curriculum for students,
  2. to develop appropriate school level teaching learning resources (including textbooks, handbooks and other materials for students and teachers) and
  3. to implement teacher training and develop teacher materials

SCERT has decided to adopt the ICT curriculum developed by NCERT as the basis for the text book, which leverages the possibilities of ICTs for connecting and learning and creating and learning. The textbook will be used by the school teachers for transacting the ICT curriculum in classes 8 to 10 and will also have linkages to the regular school subject curriculum. In a consultation conducted in February with NCERT-CIET, HBSCE, ITfC, SCERT members and a core group of teachers, a plan was developed for the creation of student textbook and teacher handbook. Subsequently, Telangana participated in a consultative meeting held in RIE Mysuru, by CEMCA, for collaboration on programs on ICT in Education. In view of CEMCA's experience in the area of OER creation, the Telangana Department of School Education has invited CEMCA to support the creation of ICT textbook and handbook, as above, with ITfC as an implementation partner. This consultative workshop is to approve the framework, scope and approach for ICT textbook for the first year, and develop an approach for OER creation, review and publishing.
